The Toyota Sequoia has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Palisade doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

The Sequoia has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Palisade doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The Sequoia has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Palisade doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the Sequoia and the Palisade have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available four-wheel drive.

The Toyota Sequoia weighs 748 to 1765 pounds more than the Hyundai Palisade. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

There are over 45 percent more Toyota dealers than there are Hyundai dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the Sequoia’s warranty.

The battery on the Sequoia is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the Sequoia’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The Palisade’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Sequoia second among large suvs in their 2025 Initial Quality Study. The Palisade isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Hyundai vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 60 more problems per 100 vehicles, Hyundai is ranked 25th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Hyundai vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota third in overall reliability. Hyundai is ranked 10th.

The Sequoia’s 3.4 turbo V6 hybrid produces 150 more horsepower (437 vs. 287) and 323 lbs.-ft. more torque (583 vs. 260) than the Palisade’s standard 3.5 DOHC V6. The Sequoia’s 3.4 turbo V6 hybrid produces 108 more horsepower (437 vs. 329) and 244 lbs.-ft. more torque (583 vs. 339) than the Palisade’s optional 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

On the EPA test cycle the Sequoia RWD gets better fuel mileage than the Palisade 3.5 DOHC V6 FWD (21 city/24 hwy vs. 19 city/25 hwy).

Regenerative brakes improve the Sequoia’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Palisade doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The Sequoia has 4.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the Palisade Hybrid’s standard fuel tank (22.5 vs. 18.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Sequoia has 3.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Palisade V6’s standard fuel tank (22.5 vs. 19 gallons).

A 10-speed automatic is standard on the Toyota Sequoia, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Palisade.

For better stopping power the Sequoia’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Palisade:

The Sequoia’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Palisade are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the Sequoia has larger standard tires than the Palisade (265/70R18 vs. 235/65R18). The Sequoia TRD Pro’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Palisade (285/65R18 vs. 265/45R21).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Sequoia Capstone has standard 22-inch wheels. The Palisade’s largest wheels are only 21-inches.

The Toyota Sequoia’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Hyundai Palisade only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Sequoia has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Palisade; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

The Sequoia offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Palisade’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Sequoia’s wheelbase is 5.1 inches longer than on the Palisade (122 inches vs. 116.9 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Sequoia is 1 inch wider in the front and 1 inch wider in the rear than the average track on the Palisade.

For greater off-road capability the Sequoia SR5 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Palisade (8.4 vs. 7.4 inches), allowing the Sequoia to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Sequoia TRD Pro’s minimum ground clearance is .7 inch higher than on the Palisade XRT PRO (9.1 vs. 8.4 inches).

The Sequoia has 3.8 inches more front hip room, 3.6 inches more front shoulder room, 4.1 inches more rear hip room, .8 inches more rear shoulder room, 1.6 inches more third row legroom, 5.6 inches more third row hip room and 7 inches more third row shoulder room than the Palisade.

The Sequoia’s cargo area provides more volume than the Palisade.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Sequoia. The Palisade doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The Sequoia’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the liftgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The Palisade’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

The Sequoia’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the Palisade’s (9120 vs. 5000 pounds).

While the Palisade Hybrid can only tow 4000, any Sequoia can tow a minimum of 9120 pounds.

The engine in the Sequoia is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Palisade. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The Sequoia’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Palisade does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Sequoia’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Palisade’s standard rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

If the windows are left open on the Sequoia the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Toyota service department.) The driver of the Palisade can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Toyota Sequoia has power folding mirrors that offer unparalleled convenience while maneuvering in tight places or parked. With the mirrors folded it’s easier to walk past and help prevent parking damage. The mirrors can be quickly unfolded when the driver is ready to leave. Power folding mirrors are only offered on the Palisade SEL Premium/Limited/Calligraphy/Hybrid.

The Toyota Sequoia has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the rear view mirror. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Hyundai charges extra for Homelink® on the Palisade.
